ABOUT THE LAB
What is a sustainable building?
In an ideal world, all buildings would be self-sustaining and easily adaptable. In trying to create that future some difficulties arise.
How do you renovate a building that has a temporary function? What can you do to compensate for the environmental footprint? What if you test a measure with high investment costs and it doesn’t work out?
Temporary spaces can facilitate experimentation with sustainable measures; without high investment costs. This lab will explore how. ANNA Vastgoed & Cultuur (ANNA Real Estate & Culture) manages over 30 buildings in The Hague. These are often old and have monument status. There is no cookie-cutter solution to making them environmentally friendly and this makes investing difficult. We invite sustainability innovators, real estate employees, and policy experts to join us to find possible solutions.
Through talks, brainstorms, and games, we will work our way up to real ideas to implement in real locations. In the former American Embassy, recently opened as an art exhibit by West under the name ‘Our Embassy’, we will be working on simplifying the process of reducing the footprint of special buildings. The embassy is a difficult case in and of itself. For example, due to the unique shape and monument status, the windows are difficult to replace. Let the building inspire you to find solutions!
Want to try different colours of light? Want to try different forms of room heating? Want to try vertical farming? Want to try water circulation?
We want the opportunity to experiment with all kinds of sustainable measures. Let’s reduce the footprint of temporary locations in unsustainable buildings together.
1. Why is the investment in revamping a building to be more sustainable rarely ever made?
2. Which sustainable measures for buildings are available?
3. How are those measures different for temporary locations?
4. Who could profit from sustainable measures in temporary locations?
5. How can we achieve something after Border Sessions?
Sustainability experiments can be of great value to temporary locations if you give them a try.
